Hi! I have been looking thru the tribe listings in hopes of meeting people to jam or shmooze about music! I'm into trance/ambient and have been learning to play the keyboard/synth for about 18 months. Also I'm learning Reason sequencing software and when I've mastered that, i hope I can create awesome tracks.

I live in Eastern PA and I'm sure most of you are about 1000 miles away. But still I would like to talk & maybe learn some things. Most of the people in this genre are young guys and I'm a 'mature' woman so I really feel out of place. I want to go to the Gaian Mind trance fest and I'm sure I'll be the oldest person there. Oh well...if it's dark enough they won't notice, LOL.

Really the story to me about women in electronica... I lack the confidence to go out & learn stuff. When I was growing up, anything technical or electronic was Guy Stuff. It is an uphill struggle not to feel like an idiot as I ask "what do you mean by a noise gate? What are sends and inserts" and of course "can someone help me carry my Amp"? Duhhh....!

I'd love to talk to some of you & hear your stories!

We are proud to announce Traffick Jam, a benefit event for the Project to End Human Trafficking, a local non-profit organization based out of Carlow University. Their website can be found here:
http://www.endhumantrafficking.org
There is also ample information available from other websites and from me [Jaime Turek] if anyone would like more information on the cause [punkisphun@gmail.com].

When: Friday April 11th
Time: 9pm-2am
Cost: $10 minimum donation
Where: Anthony's
950 Ohio River Blvd
Pittsburgh, PA 15202
Who: 21+
Now really, WHO:

DJ Meghan (Goahead/Psylicious/Xcience) vs. Eryn Evans (Sinister Movement, Phoenix Management, B.A.D. ASS) [Psytrance]

DJ 7UP (Steel City Funk) w/ live percussion by percussionist/DJ Anthony Fugate [House]
Matt Monroe vs. Paul Alexander (Humanaut) [Tech House/Techno]

Jason Cuban (Full House Productions) vs. Brandon Andrews (Cool House Collective) [Tech House/Techno]

Sean Kramer (B.A.D. Ass) [Progressive]

DJ Kip Collins (AMPM) [Progressive]

Sound and Lights by BigB

Some people suggested that I give some information about what I do so here I go. I go to grad school for international development and my major is human security. I focus on human trafficking and plan to pursue a career in that field once I graduate. I am currently volunteering for this organization and will be interning with them over the summer. They have a very small staff but are trying to expand. I have planned this event with the help of my boyfriend and 100% of the ticket sales go directly to the organization. Myself and the DJs are doing this soley to raise money for this cause. Now some info on human trafficking:

The trafficking of human beings is the recruitment, transportation, harbouring, or receipt of people for the purpose of exploitation. It is estimated to be a $5 to $9 billion-a-year industry. Trafficking victims typically are recruited using coercion, deception, fraud, the abuse of power, or outright abduction. Threats, violence, and economic leverage can often make a victim consent to exploitation.

Exploitation includes forcing people into prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs. For children, exploitation may also include forced prostitution, illicit international adoption, trafficking for early marriage, or recruitment as child soldiers, beggars, or for religious cults.

I'd be more than happy to supply anyone with more information upon request. I don't want to write a book on here.

Thanks for letting me in the tribe. I can't wait to meet some of you... But first, I need some new mixes to post.....

My podcast needs some new flavor! I try and post 4 mixes a week when I'm not wasting away in a cubicle... I choose based on ability to mix, not genre.

Since January 2007, the podcast has been downloaded 12,000 times. There are no ads and nothing is for sale. Just music to listen to .... I do this so my friends who have day jobs can listen to new commercial free electronic music every week. I also do this to help promote people who can mix well. Most mixes I get are sitting on someones hard-drive collecting digital dust when there are people out there dying for new stuff.

http://podcast.goodbeats.com

If you want to be a part of it, please send me a message with a link (to an online MP3 mix that is less than 100 MB) and I will review it to post. The average mix is downloaded 75 times. The most downloads we have for a single mix is 365 and counting.

Please pass this on. I believe people are starting to organize around
this incident.
--------------------------------------
UTAH RAVERS TREATED LIKE TERRORISTS! EVOL INTENT'S ACCOUNT OF THE INCIDENT!

Originally Posted by knick evl ntnt

Last night, I was booked to play an event about an hour outside of Salt
Lake City, Utah. The hype behind this show was huge, they presold 700
tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total. The promoters did an
amazing job with the show.. they even made slipmats with the flyers on
them to promote in local shops.

So, we got to the show around 11:15 or so and it was really cool. It was
all outdoors, in a valley surrounded by huge mountains. They had an
amazing light show flashing on to a mountain behind the site, the sound
was booming, the crowd was about 1500 people thick and everything just
seemed too good to be true really. Well...

At about 11:30 or so, I was standing behind the stage talking with
someone when I noticed a helicopter pulling over one of the mountain
tops. I jokingly said "Oh look, here comes big brother" to the person I
was with. I wasn't far off.

The helicopter dipped lower and lower and started shining its lights on
the crowd. I was kind of in awe and just sat and watched this thing
circle us for a minute. As I looked back towards the crowd I saw a guy
dressed in camoflauge walking by, toting an assault rifle. At this
point, everyone was fully aware of what was going on . A few "troops"
rushed the stage and cut the sound off and started yelling that everyone
"get the fuck out of here or go to jail". This is where it got really
sticky.

No one resisted. That's for sure. They had police dogs raiding the crowd
of people and I saw a dog signal out a guy who obviously had some drugs
on him. The soldiers attacked the guy (4 of them on 1), and kicked him a
few times in the ribs and had their knees in his back and sides. As they
were cuffing him, there was about 1000 kids trying to leave in the
backdrop, peacefully. Next thing I know, A can of fucking TEAR GAS is
launched into the crowd. People are running and screaming at this point.
Girls are crying, guys are cussing... bad scene.

Now, this is all I saw with my own eyes, but I heard plenty of other
accounts of the night. Now this isnt gossip I heard from some candy
raver, these are instances cited straight out of the promoters mouth..

- One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by one
of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the police
tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH.

- The police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying to
document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy filming
and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and luckily.. his
friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless footage. That's not
all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to be more footage.

- The police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main
promoter went up to them with the permit for the show and said "here, I
have the permit." The police then said, "no you don't" and ripped the
permit out of his hand. Then, they put an assault rifle to his forehead
and said "get the fuck out of here right now."

Now.. let's get the facts straight here.

This event was 100% legal. They had every permit the city told them they
needed. They had a 2 MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy for the event. They
had liscenced security guards at the gates confiscating any alcohol or
drugs found upon entry (yes, they searched every car on the way in). Oh,
I suppose I should mention that they arrested all the security guards
for possession.

Oh another interesting fact.. the police did not have a warrant. The
owner of the land already has a lawsuit against the city for something
similar. A few months ago, she rented her land for a party and the
police raided that as well. And catch this, the police forced her to
LEAVE HER OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY. That's right. They didnt arrest her,
but made her leave her own property!!!

Don't get it twisted, this is all going down in probably THE most
conservative state in the USA. And this is scary.. a gross violation of
our civil liberties. The police wanted this party shut down, so they
made it happen. Even though everything about this event was legal. The
promoters spent over $ 20,000 on this show and did everything they had
to to make it legit, only to have it taken away from them by a group of
radical neo-con's with an agenda.

This was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed in person. I
can't even begin to describe how surreal it was. Helicopters, assault
rifles, tear gas, camoflauge-wearing soldiers.... why? Was that really
necessary?

This needs to be big news across the USofA. At least in our music scene
(edm as a whole)... this could happen to any of us at any time. When
we're losing the right to gather peacefully, we're also letting the
police set a standard of what we can get away with. And I think that's
BULLSHIT!

The system fucked up last night... They broke up a party that was 100%
legal and they physically hurt a lot of people there at the same time.
The promoters already have 6 lawsuits ready to file with their lawyers
and the ACLU is already involved.

I'm sure some pictures (and hopefully some video) will surface soon.
I'll make sure to post them up here on 404, so you can see the Police
State of America at work.

p.s. - there are more stories of police brutality that i'll post up
later. gotta hit the airport soon. can't wait to get the fuck out of
this shit hole state.

I'm hoping for advice.

I am seeking original house music beats (preferably without too many lyrics) which can be included in a hula hooping instructional dvd I am making. Happier, juicy, soulful house with elements of disco -- basically any house music that makes you smile widely and tap your foot and shake your head.

Do you have any sugggestions on royalty free sources of such groovy music, or have leads on any friends who produce house music who may be open to donating a song to this creative project. I don't have any cash, but I can give you a copy of the final instructional dvds and a handcrafted pro hoop when the project is done as well as credits on the dvd and links from the website.

If you have any leads can you respond directly to info@hoopgirl.com

With respect for the music,
Christabel

electronica through live vocal and instrumental
performance, laptop and turntable manipulations and
strict hand-on-knob tweaking. Two beautiful rooms
the best underground and new music being produced.
And, for the second year in a row, Digital Bliss will
and programmer Lynda Arnold is Divasonic. Her sound
is a blend of electronic beats ranging from trip-hop
to house to drum-n-bass. Samples and synths combined
with blissfully performed flute and keyboard
improvisations add to her unique production flavor.
Original lyrics derived from her poetry often touch on
spiritual themes and emotional memories past and
present. Check out her latest album ‘Birth.’
bass elements, and mesmerizing vocals, Divasonic's
electronic excursions cast a powerful and
unforgettable face.” – Download.com
Artemis (San Francisco)
www.artemis.fm

Breathing a rich dose of soul into the cool digital
world, electronica artist Artemis brews up seductive
sonic concoctions, deftly weaving poetry and pure
emotion into psychoacoustic landscapes pulsing with
both otherworldly and organic life. With her roots in
classical and folk music, training in vocal traditions
from several corners of the globe, and an ear for
innovation, Artemis puts electronic music's limitless
spectrum to bold use. Her style ranges from sparse and
sparkling to richly symphonic, blending elements of
downtempo, triphop, drum and bass, breakbeats, and
electro-pop to create a potent fusion set ablaze with
siren vocals as riveting as they are intimate. Check
out her latest album ‘Gravity.’
Along with running a geeky jewelry design company
(Zelle), an online
magazine (Modsquare), and the subVariant record label,
Liz McLean
Knight produces bright, melodic IDM . She takes a
funky machine-noise groove, combines it with a pretty
melody and adds a sprinkling of glitched-out textures.
Think along the lines of early Autechre, Aphex Twin,
or Four Tet, with some fleeting,
glitchy-minimal-techno moments. Her DJ sets—as Liz
Revision--feature the finest in
melodic-yet-structurally-challenging IDM, prominently
featuring Modsquare net-releases and selected tracks
that fit her electronic, quirkily-subversive
sensibility. Quantazelle is featured in XLR8R

Downloading music

I love downloading music and burning cd mixes. So many of the free downloaded tracks have their ends cut off. Very annoying. What I need is some kind of mixing software to blend the end of the track with the beginning of the next one. A PC using friend uses Roxio. I use a Mac. Of course free software is very appealing, if anyone knows of any. Or just what to buy.

Thanks,

I bought the teeny tiny Oxygen 8 midi keyboard from M Audio so I could compose while on the road. Reason simply refuses to recognize the keyboard. Help! Im on Mac 10.3.9

I reinstalled all the drivers that M-audio offers in re: to this keboard. USB cord seems OK. It does not show up in audio control surfaces--I manually added it, but still can't seem to get it working.

My big Kurzweil K2000, however, is patched in via the m audio UNO usb adapter--that works fine. :)

Not what you thought it was, is it??

Seriously - this is going to be a great show. Zonk's new cd, 'Half Human', is absolutely rockin' and this is probably the last show they'll be doing for awhile, as Nicole is going to be having a baby soon!

Hope to see you there!

Check out some of these artists and others on the new RTFM Records website:

Three of San Francisco's finest emerging female
songwriters will command the stage at 12 Galaxies on
August 11th. It's a night of girls, Girls, GIRLS!
featuring the lush symphonic electronica of Artemis,
the fiery psychedelic rock of The New Up, and the raw,
danceable trip-hop-rock of ZONK. These bands vary in
their sound and style, covering a wide span of genres
between them, yet are connected in their ability to
craft strong original material and create a dramatic
and electrifying live show.

ZONK :: zonkaholics.com
After their 2004 breakthrough with Our Five Worst
Songs grabbed them opening slots nationwide for such
diverse acts as De La Soul, Concrete Blonde, and Lady
Kier (Deee-Lite) and worldwide recognition through
Konami's popular video game, Dance Dance Revolution,
ZONK's latest release, Half Human, has them joining
forces with the B-52's in the midst of their West
Coast tour schedule. Sometimes likened to "Beck meets
Portishead," ZONK is a modern melding of styles united
by a distinctive, sultry voice and thoughtful
songwriting.
"ZONK... hmmm... fresh from some other planet. We love
'em."
˜Johnette Napolitano, Concrete Blonde
"Local trip-hop foursome ZONK turns the
characteristically languorous and melancholy style's
perma-frown upside down. Frontlady McFiendish's
sex-dripping vocals lend a sultry air to the band's
quirky, beat-driven blend of turntable, laptop, live
guitar and bass and harmonica, yes, harmonica."
˜Bill Picture, SF Examiner

The New Up :: thenewup.com
With a searing lead guitar and thundering rhythm
section, tempered by a flute and sexy female vocals,
The New Up's sound weaves elements of psychedelia,
pop, ska and funk. This San Francisco five-piece cut
its teeth in the Chicago indie scene before immersing
itself in the Bay Area's vibrant music community,
impressing audiences with electric performances that
feature an eclectic repertoire of originals,
discerning covers and inspired improvisations. The New
Up recorded a version of the Talking Heads song "What
a Day That Was" for a cover compilation of the
legendary band and is currently at work on its second
album, a follow-up to the band's self-titled debut
release.
"Fear of Music Talking Heads with Peep Show Siouxsie
leading them: punkish but professional, accented
everywhere by an insistent need to add spice and
scope."
˜Dennis Cook, JamBase
"Trippy eruptions, retro-funk wacka-wacka, dance
thumps, and Pretenders-ish new wave."
˜Monica Kendrick, Chicago Reader

Artemis :: artemis.fm
A seductive blend of daydreamy beats and starry-eyed
breaks, the lush symphonic sound of Artemis is turning
heads in the Bay Area and abroad with her recent third
release, Gravity (RTFM/Magnatune/Cyberset). Joined by
fellow members of electronic artist collective RTFM
for live performances featuring Artemis
(vocals/flutes/programming), Daniel Berkman (handsonic
percussion/kora/keys/guitar) and Cliff Tune
(V-drums/bass), Artemis and her posse weave a hypnotic
synergy, offering listeners an inspiring aural
journey.
"Gravity further refines Artemis's approach to
producing lush, intricate trip-hop and electro-pop."

I was trying to research the differences between Native Instruments BATTERY
and FLStudio Producers edition (vis a viz the way they handle sample playback and sample auditioning) and I stumbled on an earlier thread at this tribe
about favorite VST/DX plugins and thought I'd quickly join to let you all
know that we have a very cool PLUGINS specific site called
AudioPluginJunkiesAnnonymous here at tribe that you might all want to join.

The coolesst thing about this tribe is that early on we had a huge thread where everyone collated all of their favorite sites for freeware pluginsn for both Mac and PC.

Come join us there and please contribue to those earlier lists if you see any glaring omissions in them (or even if you have a favorite quirky plugin that isn't listed).

And, while you are at it, can anyone hip me to the differences between battery and flstudio?

yours, Rick Walker

ps lol, I'm not a woman in electronica music but I did produce the first
Woman's Live Looping Festival at the San Jose Museum of Art a couple of years ago...........I'll unsubscribe if that doesn't fit the ticket here. Just let me know. I do want to be respectful.

Hey Ladies,
I just released an EP with my band Cosmic Star. We are using alot of old school synths, moogs, some vocoding and acoustic instruments, like melodica, autoharp, and bizarre percussion. I know its not house, and it is kinda tongue and cheek, but let me know what you think!

Hello. I am new to this Tribe and would like to introduce a Tribe I recently started. It is for women in ANY genre of music.

It is called Women Who Rock, and I would love for it to be a place where women who are producers, engineers, dj's, studio musicians, band members, managers, execs, label owners, students, interns, enthusiasts, songwriters, composers can network and help each other. ANY genre, ANY skill level, from beginner to virtuoso. Jazz, pop, rock (and all sub-genres), all electronic genres, classical, etc, etc, etc.

womeninmusic.tribe.net or send me a message for an invite. Open membership!

I started this particular tribe because I am a student who needs mentors! So, come join us, especially if you've got skills!

I hope I am not stepping on the toes of this Tribe, I don't mean to.
Thanks!

I'm updating my website and have two queries:

1) How do I create an audio stream that automatically runs on my front page and stops when users clicks their next page?

2) How do I create audio streams that can be activated by users from an HTML page with an interface that allows them to play, pause, rewind, etc.?

Any ideas or resources would be very appreciated. I've got some web development and audio skills, so I am looking to set this up myself.

Thanks!

Hey Ladies...

I really am looking for a dope ass female bass player. I'm sick of the boys trying to turn studio time into dating time.

I am in LA - I have pro-tools, coupla synths, a good set-up. I make loops and sing.

I want a cool down to earth electronically oriented bass player (real or synth) who wants to compose with a decidedly non-hollywood girl.

I'm 27 and good at what I do.

Are you out there?

Hello lovely ladies. So we are hard at work on trying to put together the elements for our Women in Electronic music festival but we are stumped on a name. I thought I would throw it out there and see if any of you creative ladies could help us think of a name for the event.
It will be a big night of all women in electronic music with a focus on women beat writers and producers. The genres will be mixed from downtempo, house, tribal, world dub, breaks, drum–n-bass, idm, experimental, electro/acoustic and more.

Hi Beautiful Muse-ic Goddeses!
I do hypnotherapy, but I really don't like the traditional new-agey music that people use for sessions. (I am way too spoiled raving it up in San Fransisco.)
Does anyone have any ideas on some music for some trance inducing ambiant for my hypnotherapy?
Thank you!
:)

Seeking live ladies...

Hello friends. I am searching for women to be involved in a fairly large event my friend and I are producing. We hope to have a fairly large budget and would like it to be an annual event. At the moment we have almost all the live acts but we would be open to others if you would like to send a demo. The event will consist of two days featuring an all women event produced by women for women and supporting women in electronic music and women general.
The basic idea behind the event is that it is women producers. Women who are beat writers, composers, DJs, VJs, and arrangers. I would like to break out of the sterotype of a band with a female singer and work with women who are established writers, VJs, DJs, etc...
If you fit into that catagory, please write me and I promise I will listen to your material. I think this will be a wonderful event.
What we are really looking for now is some very good VJs, DJs and solid live perfomers.
Please write me or respond here and we can go from there....

Thanks,
R

FUCK...compilation

weeeee... pardon my excitement about this but I'll be included on a compilation [concrete cookie + incredibad] coming out this summer! :] [as well as my mash up soundsystem mate "THE Maggot Farmer" and his 'Domestic Violence' track!]

its a cool label that doesn't stick to one genre or bpm...but its all about the music! [HIVE RECORDS]... it'll be a nice sort of A mash up!

"vi. + Various Artists - FUCK CD / Ltd. 2CD Set

Hive Records' second compilation release, FUCK brings together some of the best dark rhythm and experimental knob-twistery in electronic music today. While the songs collected here could almost all be tearing tendons on a dancefloor, each is also more than that - these songs were collected with the music lover in mind, and each track is a work dually suited to listening and moving.

Hive Records wants you to fuck. Fuck mediocre electronica. Fuck immature scenesters. Fuck censorship. Fuck sitting still, get up and break something.

The first 100 copies come packaged in a double slim DVD case and feature a special bonus CD with extra tracks. Photography by Lithium Picnic Studios.

Artists contributing are Pneumatic Detach, Converter, Larvae, Censor, Unter Null, Railgun, End, Concrete Cookie vs Incredibad, Muted Logic, Manufactura vs Kate Mosh, Lapsed, Iszoloscope, Ou Moins, HIV+, Exclipsect, Mago, Asche, The Maggot Farmer, Terrorfakt, Prospero, Tekniq, Kaebin Yield, Idyl, Lament Configuration, Synth-Etik, Bitsplitter, Unitcode:Machine, and Rudra Vena. Possibly more to come...

Look for this comp to drop sometime this summer."

Live Ladies

I've seen quite a few ladies DJing, but not too many doing live stuff, and I was wondering why that is. I really like some of the live sets I have seen some ladies do, and I'd certainly like to be feelin more of the feminine energy in the music. What would be a good way to encourage more women to make their own music and put it forward? I'm just a guy and I don't know these things, so please don't come down on me like I should. I've asked questions like this in other forums, and just gotten a lot of man-hating comments, and that's not at all what I'm looking for. I want to see more equality between the genders, and those in-between as well, and I think music has a lot of opportunity for that. Suggestions, please?

I want to introduce myself to y'all. I'm a vocalist, working in improv and jazz right now, with a background in classical, folk, and musical theater. I'm playing a lot with looping as a soloist and with my vocal/electronics trio.

I've recently been bitten by the bebop bug and I'm looking to work some tunes out with a DJ or Producer. I see hip-hop working particularly well but I'm open to other genres as well. If you've got the skills and interest, drop me a line.

Thanks for reading,

I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm concrete cookie and I play with a few guys and solo as part of Mash Up Soundsystem here in L.A. Used to play the piano...now just program my own stuff and play keyboards... the music ranges from discombobulated electro'ish IDM to hard experimental industrial stuff...sometimes completely silly and other times completely political.

hmmm... i think that's it for now I should probably go to work!:]

submissions for the Y2K4 Live Looping Festival

I am, obviously, not a woman and I'll more than happily
unsubscribe if my joining makes anyone uncomfortable
but I just wanted to let you know that I have been trying
to increase the number of women in electronica and in the live looping movement that I have been very active in for several years now. I've been teaching computer sound design and encouraging women that I know to get involved with electronica
due to the incredible of dirth of women in this sometimes
depressing boys club.

Phyll (Dark Muse) talked about performing at the Y2k3 LIve looping festival this past year which is the festival that I produce in Santa Cruz, California. At that, and also at
the First Woman's Live Looping Festival that I curated for the San Jose Musuem of Art last year, I've attempted to encourage
young women to get involved with the making of electronic music, both on the computer and on the hardware side.
At the SJMA festival I actually found two very talented women who had never looped before and lent them live looping hardware a couple of months ahead of the show so that they could produce a 15 minute performance.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you folks know that I would really love it if you would submit for the next big Live looping event (probably the Y2K4 Live Looping Festival next year). I will very seriously consider any submissions that anyone sends me.

I can be reached at rickwalker@looppool.info
and anyone can send me submissions to

Submissions: Y2k4
412 Darwin Street
Santa Cruz, California
95062-2629

I'm gonna unsubsribe right now and leave you all to it.
Best of luck in your creative endeavors. If I can ever be
of service to anyone, please let me know.

yours, in creativity and community, Rick

Pink Noises

Some of you probably already know about this site, but I thought I'd pass it on just in case. Pink Noises was created by Tara Rodgers (aka Analog Tara) to promote women in electronic music culture and to act as a resource for women. I had the pleasure of booking Tara for a show, and she's a talented performer, who's erstwhile in her mission. Her site features profiles, gear reviews, music reviews, audio samples and more. It was nominated for the 2003 Webby Awards, and it's gotten a bit of press.
